Since my injury is so high, I was put in a halo brace to prevent my neck and head from moving. I wore the brace for three months and I couldn’t wait to get it off. The day finally came, and on October 2nd, two years ago, I got my halo off! I didn’t realize how scared I would be. Even though the bones in my neck were stable, the muscles were weak and I didn’t trust that I could hold my head up on my own. I relied on wearing a neck brace for months after even though it wasn’t really necessary.
In some ways, wearing the neck brace even when I didn’t actually need it reminds me of how sometimes in life we rely on things we don’t need instead of fully trusting in God to give us what we need. We put our trust in things or people and are disappointed when they fall short of what we expected. But God will never fall short or disappoint you. We have to remember to rely fully on Him and not on something else to keep us safe. Sure depending on the neck brace is small in comparison to fully depending on God, but it serves as a reminder to be brave enough to let go of unnecessary things. Is there something you may be holding onto that is giving you a false sense of security? Pray that God will show you and help get rid of things you may be holding on to instead of clinging to Him.
